Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 21, 2026
This policy explains what the Hi, How Are You? app ("the app") collects, why, and what you can do about it. The app is run by Hi How Are You Foundation Inc, and you can reach us at info@hihowareyou.org with any question about this policy.
What we collect
Your account. Your email address, and your name if you give us one. Email is the only thing we require, because it is how you sign in.
What you write. Journal entries, mood check-ins and any notes attached to them, breathing session records, and posts you make on the community wall.
Your profile. A profile photo if you upload one, and the Happy Habit you pick as your anchor during onboarding.
Ambassador information. If you apply to the ambassador program, we keep your application answers, your tier, your bio, the events you host, and reports you file after those events.
Fundraising information. If you run a campaign, we keep the campaign details and the donation totals reported back to us by Givebutter. We never see or store donor payment details.
Device information. A push notification token, so we can send you reminders and updates. You can turn push notifications off in your device settings at any time.
We do not collect your location, your contacts, or your health records. We do not use advertising trackers, and we do not build advertising profiles.
Why we collect it
To sign you in and keep you signed in.
To show you your own journal, streaks, badges and history.
To run the parts of the app you choose to use: the community wall, events, the ambassador program, fundraising campaigns.
To send notifications you have opted into.
To keep the service working, spot abuse, and fix problems.
We do not sell your information. We do not share it with advertisers.
Who can see your journal
Your journal entries, mood check-ins and breathing sessions are private to you. Other users cannot read them, and we do not read them either, except in the rare case where the law requires it or where it is strictly necessary to investigate a security problem or a credible risk to someone's safety.
The community wall is different. Anything you post there is visible to other people using the app. Posting anonymously hides your name from other users, but the post is still linked to your account in our records, and it is deleted along with everything else if you delete your account.
Who we share information with
We use a small number of service providers to run the app. They only get what they need to do their job:
Render hosts the app's servers.
Neon hosts the database.
Upstash handles temporary caching.
Amazon Web Services stores profile photos.
Resend sends sign-in and notification emails.
Google Firebase delivers push notifications.
Givebutter runs fundraising campaigns and donations.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to prevent serious harm to someone.
Crisis situations
The app is not an emergency service and nobody is monitoring your journal for signs of distress. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the US), or your local emergency number.
How long we keep things
We keep your information for as long as your account exists. Sign-in links expire 15 minutes after they are created.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app: open your profile and tap Delete Account. This permanently removes your journal entries, mood check-ins, streaks, badges, notifications, RSVPs, community wall posts, and your ambassador profile if you have one.
Security
We encrypt information in transit, store sign-in tokens in your device's secure storage, and restrict internal access to the database.
Age
The app is intended for adults, and you must be 18 or older to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, email us at info@hihowareyou.org and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or get a copy of it.
You can change your profile photo in the app, and you can delete your account and everything in it from your profile. For anything else, including correcting your name or getting a copy of your data, email us at info@hihowareyou.org and we will respond within the time your local law allows.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that meaningfully affects you, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
